There’s a sense that Lombok attracts travellers who’ve had enough of Bali, or at least those looking for something beyond it. Lombok offers exactly that. And with that in mind, here is everything you need to know before coming to the island.
From the air, Lombok looks deceptively quiet. Long curves of pale sand, a jagged green spine of mountains, villages tucked between rice fields and sea. It’s an island that doesn’t try to impress at first glance—and that’s precisely its appeal.
If you are seeking a slower rhythm, fewer crowds, and landscapes that still feel largely untouched, Lombok offers an alternative to Bali that feels both familiar and refreshingly different.
Is Lombok Worth Visiting?
We are not bragging, but it is absolutely worth it, although, it is not for the same reasons people visit Bali.
Lombok rewards people who value space, nature, and a sense of place over nightlife and convenience. The beaches are wide and uncrowded, the interior is lush and mountainous, and daily life still revolves around farming, fishing, and prayer rather than tourism schedules.
In Lombok, you should expect small boutique hotels, locally run homestays, roadside warungs, and villages where tourism is present but not dominant. Lombok is ideal for travellers who enjoy exploring independently, spending time outdoors, and experiencing an island that still feels grounded in its traditions.
Getting to Lombok from Bali
Reaching Lombok from Bali is straightforward, with three main options depending on your budget, schedule, and tolerance for sea travel.
Fast Boat
Fast boats are the most popular choice among travellers and offer a scenic journey across the Lombok Strait. Departures run daily from several ports in Bali, often with hotel transfers included from areas like Seminyak, Kuta, and Ubud.
Travel time varies significantly depending on sea conditions and route, ranging from just over an hour to more than three hours on rougher days.
The Padangbai–Senggigi or Padangbai–Bangsal routes are typically the quickest.
Flying from Bali to Lombok
Flying is the fastest and most reliable way to reach Lombok, especially during the rainy season when sea conditions can disrupt boat schedules. Flights operate daily from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to Lombok International Airport.
The flight itself is short, but allow extra time for airport transfers and check-in.
Public Ferry

For budget travellers, the public ferry remains the cheapest way to travel between the islands. It’s primarily used by locals and freight vehicles, but tourists are welcome.
The journey is long and basic, but reliable.

Getting Around Lombok
Lombok doesn’t have a formal public transport system like buses or trains, but getting around is still relatively easy with the right expectations.
Private Drivers
Hiring a private driver is one of the most comfortable ways to explore the island. Drivers can be booked for half-day or full-day trips and often double as informal guides, offering local insight along the way.
This option is especially popular for visiting waterfalls, remote beaches, or Mount Rinjani trailheads.
Taxis
Taxis are widely available in tourist areas and major towns. Bluebird Lombok Taksi and Express Taksi are the most reliable operators, and fares are generally affordable.
Bemo
Bemos—small, shared minibuses—are a common sight in Lombok, especially around Mataram and Senggigi. They’re inexpensive and practical for short distances, though routes can be confusing for first-time visitors.
Scooter and Car Rentals
For independent travellers, renting a scooter or car offers maximum flexibility. An International Driver’s Licence is legally required, and road conditions can vary significantly outside main areas.
This option suits confident drivers who are comfortable navigating rural roads.
Best Time to Visit Lombok

Lombok has a tropical climate with two main seasons, similar to Bali.
Dry Season: May to September
This is the most popular time to visit, especially for outdoor activities like hiking Mount Rinjani, chasing waterfalls, and beach-hopping. July and August offer the best weather but also bring higher prices and more visitors.
Wet Season: October to April
Rainfall increases during these months, usually in short but heavy bursts. The upside is fewer crowds, greener landscapes, and lower prices. Travel is still very possible, though sea crossings may occasionally be delayed.
Shoulder Season: April and October
For many travellers, these months strike the perfect balance. The weather is generally good, prices are more reasonable, and Lombok feels calm without being empty. If flexibility allows, this is often the best time to experience the island.
