Mawi Beach has become a hidden favorite for those exploring Lombok. Tucked away in Selong Belanak Village, in the Praya Barat district of Central Lombok, this secluded beach may not be packed with people—but that’s exactly what gives it its charm. In fact, Mawi is regularly visited by some people, especially those passionate about surfing.
A Surfer’s Paradise
Mawi Beach is known as one of the best surf spots in Lombok. The waves here are notably strong and high, thanks to its open exposure to the Indian Ocean. But don’t worry—these big waves only roll in at the center of the beach. Closer to shore, the waves are much calmer, making the shallow waters safe for swimming or simply playing in the surf.
The beach itself is covered in soft white sand, similar to what you’ll find at Kuta Beach Lombok. The grains are fine, rounded, and pepper-like—creating a pleasant contrast against the deep blue sea.
More Than Just Surfing
While Mawi is best known for its waves, it offers plenty of other activities for beachgoers. You can take a peaceful walk along the shoreline, soak in the panoramic views, build sandcastles, or sunbathe under the warm island sun.
For a complete view of the coastline, you can climb the surrounding hills. From the top, you’ll get sweeping views of the open sea, the beach below, and surfers catching waves in the distance—a perfect spot for photos or a quiet moment of reflection.
Natural Beauty All Around

What makes Mawi even more special is its dramatic natural setting. The beach is framed by lush green hills on both sides, giving it a more remote and untouched feel. Along the shoreline, wild grasses and low shrubs grow freely, adding to the beach’s raw, natural charm.
At one end of the beach, a large rock formation towers over the sea. From the side, it resembles the shape of a mouse—an oddly iconic feature that makes Mawi visually distinct. Because of its dramatic curves and coastal cliffs, some peopel say it reminds them of Pantai Planet or Pantai Surga in East Lombok.
Still Untouched, Still Growing
Mawi Beach is still relatively new as a tourist destination, so facilities here are limited compared to the more developed Kuta beach area. There’s a basic parking area, a few seating spots, and several small warungs (local eateries) selling drinks and fresh seafood.
However, you won’t yet find accommodations, public toilets, prayer rooms, or souvenir shops on-site. That said, if you’re planning to stay nearby, one of the closest accommodations is the Suku Lifestyle Hotel, located about 5.6 kilometers away on Jalan Raya Selong Belanak.
Suku Lifestyle Hotel offers facilities such as a parking lot, restaurant, bar, room service, a swimming pool, air-conditioned rooms, and Wi-Fi access.
How to Get There
Mawi Beach lies along the same coastal route as other scenic spots like Semeti Beach, Selong Belanak Beach, and Batu Rudal Beach. The road to Mawi is a bit of an adventure itself—parts of it are still unpaved and rocky. You will pass through lush rice fields and dirt paths for about 3 kilometers before reaching the beach entrance.
Despite the rough access, Mawi is quite close to Lombok International Airport—only about 16 kilometers away. But if you’re come from Mataram City, be prepared for a longer journey. The trip covers about 51 kilometers and takes between 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Here’s one possible route you can follow if you’re coming from Mataram: Mataram – Cakranegara – Kediri – Bypass – Praya – Jalan Raya BIL – Batujai Penujak – Mungkus – Selong Belanak – Mawi Beach.
Our Final Takes
If you’re the kind who enjoys hidden gems, empty beaches, and world-class surf without the crowds, Mawi Beach might be your next favorite spot in Lombok. Though it’s still off the radar for many, that just adds to its appeal. Come for the waves, stay for the views, and enjoy a raw, real slice of coastal Lombok before the rest of the world catches on.
