Pantai Penyisok: A Wild and Scenic Gem Among Lombok Beaches

While Lombok beaches like Kuta or Senggigi are easy to find and flocked with tourists, Pantai Penyisok in East Lombok offers a complete contrast: untouched, rugged, and quietly breathtaking. Nestled in Jerowaru, this coastal cliffside is one of Lombok’s best-kept secrets.

What Makes Pantai Penyisok Special?

Pantai Penyisok is best known for its dramatic cliffs directly facing the Indian Ocean. The rock formations look like something out of a fantasy film—jagged, raw, and powerful. The spot is perfect for photography, sunrise and sunset watching, or simply soaking in the view in silence.

Be Warned: The Road is Brutal

Getting there isn’t easy—and that’s part of the charm. From Mataram, it takes roughly 2 hours by vehicle. But the last leg of the journey involves rough, unpaved roads, often covered in stones and loose sand. After rain, it can get muddy and dangerous.

Motorbikes (preferably trail or semi-off-road) are highly recommended. Cars can make it part-way, but not all the way to the beach. Also, avoid relying on scooter routes from Google Maps—set it to car mode instead. The alternate path can lead to a steep, unsafe shortcut.

Safety? It’s All on You

There are no fences, no guards, and no designated trails on the cliffs. And when the wind picks up, it can be dangerously strong. Don’t stand too close to the edge. Don’t risk selfies on narrow ledges. This is nature—respect it.

Minimal Facilities—So Come Prepared

Pantai Penyisok is not yet commercialized. No warungs. No toilets. No beach chairs or coconut sellers. Bring your own water, snacks, a mat, power bank, raincoat, and maybe even a ukulele if you’re into chill vibes. Entrance is Rp 10,000 per person, and the beach is open 24/7.

A few visitors noted that there’s some trash around the cliffs, so please pack your waste and help keep the beach clean.

Bonus: Cultural Heritage Nearby

Not far from the beach are Masjid Batu Apung and Lingkoq Datu, two ancient cultural sites believed to be linked to early Islamic influence and local kingdoms. They’re not grand monuments, but for those interested in local history, they add depth to the trip.

Final Thoughts: Is Pantai Penyisok Worth Visiting?

If you’re looking for luxury or convenience, skip this one. But if you want raw nature, wide ocean views, and a place where Lombok’s true wilderness still exists, then Pantai Penyisok is absolutely worth the trip.

Just be smart, come prepared, and respect the land.
