Do you notice that rain is still pouring these days? I mean, we should be in the dry season already, no? It should mean, sunshine all the time and time to surf, or more activities outside the door.

But here is a reality check, as it feels gloomy as it is, rain is still pouring sometimes.

Got to accept it, as the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) stated that there is still potential for rain to occur in the early part of the dry season.

Widi Hariarta, the officer of BMKG said in his written statement in Mataram, Wednesday, 21 May of 2025, during the last ten days of May, is an 80 to 90 percent chance of rainfall exceeding 20 mm per 10-day period in most areas of West Nusa Tenggara.

“There is a 70 percent chance of rainfall reaching 50 mm per 10-day period in parts of Mataram City, West Lombok Regency, and most areas of Central Lombok, North Lombok, and West Sumbawa Regencies,” he said.

Furthermore, there is a low chance—less than 20 percent—of rainfall reaching 100 mm per 10-day period in Mataram City and in small parts of West Lombok and Central Lombok Regencies.

There is also a new phenomenon, it is called, The Wet Dry Season! So, what Is the Wet Dry Season?

According to the book Air Quality Improvement (2017) by Tri Cahyono, the wet dry season is a condition where rain still occurs even though the dry season has started.

Meanwhile, according to the Indonesian Dictionary, the wet dry season is a dry season marked by fairly heavy rainfall. This phenomenon is also known as an above-normal dry season, predicted to receive a higher seasonal rainfall accumulation than usual in several regions.

What Causes the Wet Dry Season?

The wet dry season happens because cold temperatures in the Indian Ocean meet warm temperatures in Indonesian waters. This causes the waters around Indonesia to warm up, producing greater amounts of water vapor. This condition makes cumulus congestus clouds develop into convective rain clouds with higher intensity, accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

Under normal conditions, rainfall ranges from 50–100 millimeters per cubic period, but during above-normal conditions, it can increase up to 300 millimeters per cubic period. It is no wonder that floods and landslides often occur in some areas when this phenomenon appears.

How Long Will the Wet Dry Season Last in 2025?

According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the wet dry season or above-normal conditions are predicted to continue in several areas of Indonesia from June to August 2025.

In June 2025, about 56.54 percent of Indonesia’s area will experience wetter-than-normal conditions. Then in July 2025, the wet dry season is expected to expand to 75.38 percent of the area, and in August, 84.94 percent will experience above-normal conditions.

According to BMKG’s 2025 Dry Season Prediction Book, 108 ZOMs (Zones of Meteorological Observation) in Indonesia are predicted to receive higher-than-usual seasonal rainfall accumulations, including, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.
